From Postpartum Traditions to Pelvic Rehabilitation: Taiwan, Korea & the U.S.

Postpartum recovery is about much more than “getting your body back.”
In this episode, Joy and I compare postpartum care traditions in Taiwan, South Korea, and the United States, and explore how culture shapes the way women understand recovery after childbirth.
Taiwan and Korea have strong postpartum care traditions, including postpartum care centers, nutritional support, breastfeeding guidance, newborn care, and family assistance. In the U.S., this type of structured postpartum system is less common, while education, functional recovery, and multidisciplinary support may play a larger role.
But an important question remains:
What happens after those first few weeks?
From a rehabilitation perspective, two or three weeks postpartum is only the beginning of tissue healing. Recovery may continue for months—and for some women, even longer than a year.
In this conversation, we discuss:
▪️ Appearance versus functional recovery
▪️ Pelvic floor screening after childbirth
▪️ Diastasis recti and why function matters beyond the width of the gap
▪️ Rest versus gradual return to movement
▪️ Traditional beliefs about cold foods, washing hair, and postpartum confinement
▪️ Whether the pelvis really needs to be “realigned” after birth
▪️ How rehabilitation can rebuild strength, movement, pressure management, and confidence
▪️ Why every woman needs her own recovery timeline
Pregnancy and childbirth affect muscles, connective tissues, the nervous system, and movement patterns.
Rather than simply trying to “put the pelvis back into place,” postpartum rehabilitation should help women regain comfortable movement, strength, pressure management, and confidence in daily life.
There is no single timeline that every mother needs to follow.
Healing is individual. Recovery is individual.
The best postpartum care may come from combining the strengths of tradition—rest, support, family, and community—with modern evidence and rehabilitation principles.
Because postpartum care should not focus only on the baby. The mother who gave birth deserves care, too.
